Patent, Copyright, Internet, Et Alia

Thirty companies, including Hitachi, LG, Motorola, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba, have been targeted by an ITC investigation. The investigation is the result of a complaint by Professor Emeritus at Columbia University, Gertrude Rothschild, which alleges her patent is infringed by such popular products as Sony Blu-ray players, Motorola Razr phones and Hitachi camcorders.

The patented technology (US Pat. No. 5,252,499) relates to doping processes in wide bandgap semiconductors. Yesterday, the ITC gave notice that it will investigate potential infringement.

Four previous lawsuits over the technology with leading LED makers have been settled, suggesting Professor Rothschild has a strong patent. LEDs Magazine has more.
