Patent, Copyright, Internet, Et Alia

Last week, this Microsoft patent application published, titled “Image-Based Face Search.”  The claims cover a computer-readable media involved in the following method: (1) a user providing an image of a face, (2) the user indicating a preference for one or more facial features, (3) comparing the image provided to a plurality of stored images, and (4) displaying the resultant images.

What does all this mean?  According to the Dial-a-Phone blog, it suggests that Microsoft might be entering the mobile dating industry!  “The patent explains how a photo could be uploaded from a mobile phone or PC and compared with millions of other pictures to find similar matching faces.  Imagine a dating site that allowed you to upload a photo of a certain hot celebrity and then returned profiles of all the users who looked like them.”

It will be interesting to see where this goes.  As of right now, there has been no action on the merits.  You can follow the prosecution history here.
