Patent, Copyright, Internet, Et Alia

Yesterday I wrote about becoming a fancy beta tester for the new electronic Copyright Office (eCO). After registering as a user yesterday afternoon, the system went down for maintenance. After it came back late last night, my screen listed no option for new registrations, only preregistrations. Here’s the screen from yesterday:

An email to the help staff seemed to fix that because when I logged in today, voilĂ ! Here’s today’s screen:

As you can also see, I registered a claim! My registration is for a collection of published photographs. It was a 3-step process. #1) The application was pretty easy and tracked the copyright forms closely in substance though not form. The trickiest part was the title section. For a collection, you add multiple titles by clicking an “Add” button. For each title, you have a title type and the actual title. In my case, I had titles for the collection and each of the works within the collection. The title type for the collection title is “Title of Work Being Registered.” For each work in the collection, the title type is “Contents Titles.” #2) After completing the application it sends you to another site, pay.gov, where you can pay the reduced registration fee of $35 by credit card or electronic check. Finally, #3) I deposited copies. The upload mechanism is clunky for multiple files (I deposited 30 photos). But, it beats having the photos printed and sending them in through the mail.

Keeley sent in a registration application for a photo about one week before me through the mail. We will see whose is done first! My bet, of course, is on mine. Will you take that bet Keeley?
