Maybe change is good

Posted by Dirk Avery at 11:31 am under Internet.

Despite a decent grade, torts was a traumatic experience for me. My professor was strict and Socratic. I sweat plenty of bullets with other foxhole buddies who shared my fear. The room we met in was old and haggard, with fraying and coffee-stained carpets, beat-up wood desk tops and uncomfortable chairs. Today I walked by the room and saw that it has been remodeled. I’m not sure if I should be sad. I can’t go look at it and remember those 1L days. On the other hand, I can’t go look at it and remember those 1L days.

It made me think about the popularity of the Internet. That popularity has changed the world. Largely gone are days when you’d get a handwritten letter through the mail. National cultural cohesion may be slipping away as people are now able to find a huge array of music and shows instead of the few broadcast standbys. Anonymity sometimes bring out the worst in people. With all the material available online, probably in many cases the innocence of youth is lost prematurely. On the other hand, I can get an email from my mom, 3 states away, in about 10 seconds. And, I can find music I like that isn’t played on radio stations here. I can sit with my 4-year old and in a few seconds figure out what pteradactyls, buffalo, and bears eat, and in a few seconds more find videos of snowboarders, rabbits, and remote controlled airplanes. Scientists, doctors and researchers can collaborate from across the globe to speed up progress and find cures.

Maybe change is good.
